School History

Parkside is an independent, coeducational, non-denominational Christian day school approved by the city of Boston, home to one of the most racially and ethnically diverse student populations in the nation. Parkside currently enrolls students in preschool through grade eight. Parkside is fully integrated culturally, socio-economically, and denominationally, and seeks to build a strong sense of community among students and their families. The school’s holistic approach to developing healthy youth stresses not only the mastery of essential academic skills, but the integration of moral and spiritual values designed to develop a positive sense of identity, purpose, and commitment to learning and leading. At Parkside, we are committed to “Academic Excellence with Christian Values.” Parkside is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International.

Parkside School grew forth from the vision of Rev. George P. Hendrickson, who had a strong ministry calling to the city of Boston. Born in Brockton, MA, George was an ordained minister of the Assemblies of God and served congregations in Connecticut and Maine prior to becoming pastor of the First Assembly of God Church in Lynn, MA in 1969. In 1976, he became the director of Urban Ministries, which was at that time the primary inner city ministry of the Assemblies of God in New England. He was extremely concerned with building bridges across denominational boundaries, as evident in his active role in the Evangelical Association of Greater Lynn and the Evangelical Association of New England (now Vision New England). Although no longer a ministry of the Assemblies of God, Parkside School became the largest of the ministries that grew out of the Urban Ministries organization. Over the years, Parkside has extended the use of its facilities to house ministry programs including Bethel AME Church (Senior pastor, Rev. Dr. Ray Hammond), Starlight Ministries (An outreach to the homeless, providing space for its distribution of clothing.), Cambridge Institute (specializing in urban Christian leadership development), the Helping Hand (which distributed used clothing and toys to needy families), and the Boston Urban Youth Foundation (a youth ministry to 50-100 Boston high risk teenagers). In 2000, Parkside sold its building to Bethel AME Church, and continues in partnership with them to continue to offer quality education in the city of Boston.
